Computer Vision Engineer

Melbourne (HQ) / Sydney / Remote Australia 3+ years experience Full-time

About NXTGEN Industries

NXTGEN Industries is an Australian robotics and automation company deploying autonomous inspection systems into infrastructure, rail, construction, and mining environments. We build the full stack — from hardware integration and mission execution through to data pipelines and operator-facing platforms. Our systems operate on real assets, in real conditions, on real schedules.

The Role

We are looking for a Computer Vision Engineer to build, train, and maintain the AI models that power NXTGEN's automated defect detection and classification systems. Your work directly determines what operators see — and act on — from every inspection mission we run.

What You Will Do

  • Train and validate object detection and classification models for industrial defect detection (structural, surface, component-level)
  • Build and maintain training data pipelines — annotation workflows, dataset versioning, augmentation strategies
  • Handle domain shift and class imbalance challenges inherent to sparse industrial inspection data
  • Optimise models for edge deployment on constrained hardware (NVIDIA Jetson, Orin)
  • Collaborate with robotics engineers to tune capture parameters that affect model performance
  • Develop evaluation frameworks and regression tests for model performance across deployment environments

What We Are Looking For

  • 3+ years of production computer vision engineering experience
  • Strong proficiency in Python and PyTorch (or equivalent deep learning framework)
  • Experience with object detection and segmentation architectures (YOLO family, Detectron2, or similar)
  • Understanding of domain adaptation, fine-tuning, and transfer learning for industrial datasets
  • Experience packaging and deploying models to edge devices (TensorRT, ONNX, or similar)
  • Familiarity with active learning, annotation tooling, and data quality management

Where You’ll Work

Our head office is in Melbourne and we have a second office in Sydney. We are open to flexible and remote working arrangements anywhere in Australia for the right person, so where you are based should not stop you from applying.

This role does involve periodic travel to sites where our systems are deployed, across infrastructure, rail and construction projects around the country.
